Yesterday, alongside the road the disappearing snow pack revealed a deer carcass that provided for other animals. I suspect the deer had been hit by a car. As we passed by I could see several small birds picking around the carcass and what looked like an osprey circling above. I tried to get closer but the ditch was covered by snow and my first step from the shoulder of the road my shoe went pretty deep in the snow.
So what's the big deal? Most people have seen this type of unfortunate image alongside of the road. For me it is the deer's relationship to the land and the struggle of the ending season for all creatures.
Beast of burden?
